Engineering Manager


Job Purpose

Provide direction regarding aspects of the engineering functions within the organization while working with the leadership team to achieve both strategic and tactical goals. Set criteria, design & equipment specifications. Manage daily engineering queries on building and refrigeration performance.  Set budget for capital and process improvement and develop outside resources. Provide engineered solutions for building design and remodel criteria as well as equipment; support the projects for equipment maintenance. Initiating and supporting continuous improvement projects.  Provide coaching, direction, and technical support to the construction management team to maintain and improve processes in engineering and maintenance.



1. Serve as subject matter expert (SME) of the retail practice while demonstrating an ability to supervise, coordinate, evaluate changes and act as SME relating to troubleshooting designs, equipment, and process improvements.  Drive competencies to team on supermarket engineering best practices. Providing equipment selection that is “safe” to operate, maintaining a “safe” working environment, and encouraging “safe” work practices.



2. Proactively craft and propose solutions that clarify how SEG brings business value to address critical business challenges faced by operations and vendors. Manage and oversee field operation and engineering processes and procedures. Improve environmental impact by reducing energy usage.



3. Define and deliver platform strategies that provide configuration guidance and best practices. Perform job set-up duties such as forms, cost estimating, and baseline scheduling.  Manage overall capital project budget. Provide leadership in risk evaluation, contract negotiations, fee and pricing decisions.



4. Update, and communicate engineering criteria documentation and manage its implementation.  Manage the quality assurance/quality control program.



5. Understand and administer contract and subcontract agreements.  Foster and enhance owner, engineering, subcontractor and vendor relations.



6. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.









Education Required:

Bachelor's Degree

Course of Study:

Electrical engineering, energy management, refrigeration, or similar

Education Preferred:

Master's Degree

Course of Study:

Same as above or business administration

Relevant Experience:

10+ yrs minimum

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Knowledge of maintenance design and construction of supermarkets.  Knowledge in supermarket “Demand Side Management” programs.  Knowledge of EPA rules and regulations, Energy Star, Green and LEED.  Thorough knowledge of current principles, practices and procedures as applied to maintenance & construction of supermarkets.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Preferred:

Certified Energy Manager (CEM) designation.  Experience in supermarket refrigeration energy management systems and HVAC design.

While performing the essential functions of this position, the associate is regularly (67-100%)required to sit, use hands or fingers to handle, hold or feel objects, tools or controls, talk, see, hear and perform repetitive movements with both hands.  The employee is occassionally (1-33%)required to stand or walk on carpet, tile or concrete, carry, push, lift or pull up to 10 lbs.
